In 1507, Martin Luther began his theological studies at the University of Wittenberg and graduated with a doctorate. He later lectured here until publishing his 95 Theses in 1517, thereby triggering the process of the Reformation, which is significant from both a theological and a historico-cultural point of view. In 2017, Lutherstadt Wittenberg is the central location of the celebrations to mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
