With its sobriquet “Thuringian Rome” Erfurt emphasises the significance of the town’s churches and cloisters. Martin Luther studied at the Erfurt University from 1501 – this town was his spiritual home and later played an important role in the Reformation process. In Erfurt, Martin Luther entered the Order of the Hermits of St. Augustine and, after only a few years, was ordained as a priest in the Erfurt Cathedral.
