Leipzig plays a significant role in the Reformation – not only because of the important theological battle fought here between Luther and Johannes Eck, later to be known as the “Leipzig Debate”. Of no lesser importance is the fact that the Leipzig printing houses in particular made a major contribution to the distribution of Luther’s writings. Although Luther’s relationship to Leipzig was an ambivalent one during his lifetime, the Reformation movement would never have been able to achieve such a wide significance in such a short time without the help of this town.
